Navigating Container Prices During Chinese New Year

Recent Developments Affecting Container Spot Prices in the Plastics Industry.

With the Chinese New Year, the "Year of the Dragon" upon us, we thought sharing some critical insights with you would be helpful. We want to inform you about recent developments that have impacted container spot prices and how they relate to the plastics industry.

Recent Surges and Shifts:

Over the past 45 days, container spot rates have surged due to disruptions in the Red Sea, resulting in a 138% gain in the World Composite Index. The Asia-Europe and Asia-Mediterranean trade sectors have seen significant appreciation. However, despite rerouting challenges, some experts have expressed concerns about the uneven increase.

Chinese New Year Impact:

During the festivities, there was an expected rush to secure arrivals from Asia before the Chinese New Year. As the holidays unfold, we notice a cooling off of the sprint, with critical indices showing a dip in early February 2024. The dip signals a shift or change in the container price dynamics.

Potential Erosion of Gains:

Looking forward, there's a possibility of an erosion of gains over the next 45 days, starting on February 1, 2024. While not an exact reversal, there may be attempts to right-size the surge, considering the demand dynamics and potential factory shutdowns. This suggests that, we might see a corrective trend where the earlier rapid increases in spot rates could see a decrease or stabilization. This doesn't necessarily imply a complete reversal of the rates to their pre-surge levels but rather a moderation or adjustment to align with the demand dynamics and other factors influencing the market.

Global Supply Chain Dynamics:

The ongoing Suez re-routings continue to impact costs, with added surcharges, insurance premiums, and extended transit times. Future rate activities from carriers, including General Rate Increases (GRI), are anticipated. Having a strategic outlook on critical shipments and supply chain contingencies is essential.
